Review: Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo

Washing your hair every day is bad. It strips the natural oils out of your hair and damages it. Wash your hair every 1-2 days.

Every girl has probably heard some version of that at least once in their life. If you haven’t, then you have now. I’ll be honest, I don’t wash my hair every day and I really don’t think there’s a need to. Dirty hair is easier to style in my opinion (unless you’re straightening it, then it looks kind of gross). But what’s a girl to do if she wants to have healthy and clean hair?

Use dry shampoo.

But Tiffany, which one should I use?

Well, I’m glad you asked.

I have tried over 20 dry shampoos in my life. Some were awful and made my hair look even worse; some were alright; some were amazing, but expensive; and one was absolutely perfect—Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo. This product is heaven in an aerosol bottle.

My hair type: I have very light blonde hair (my natural color is ash blonde, but I dye it lighter)—you can take a look at my Instagram here to see—that is not oily or dry. My hair is very thin, but I have a lot of it. This means that my hair gets greasy kind of fast, and since my hair is blonde, it shows easily.

I’ve listed some of the pros and cons of the product below, and as you can see, there are not many cons. I think the pros are self-explanatory, but I just want to touch on a few things. This spray gives your hair a lot of volume at the root. What I do is spray the product on my roots only, let it sit for 30 seconds, and then brush my hair. After that, I just take my fingertips and massage my roots a little bit, and poof, my hair is refreshed and voluminous! But of course I tease my roots too because I love volume—and I’m 5’3”, so I could use a little height.

This product is great for blondes because the spray can leave a white residue, so it makes your roots or outgrowth look lighter in color. For brunettes, you can still use this, just spray a little bit at a time and make sure you really brush it out.

As far as smell goes, I marked this down as a con. It’s not that the smell is bad; it’s just not subtle at all. I wear perfume and I feel like it mixes with the smell. I like the smell for if I’m going to the gym or just wearing scented lotion, but I think this would be a better product if it was unscented or came in an unscented version.

Just as a warning, this product does have the possibility of making your hair stiff if you use too much or if you spray it on all of your hair instead of just the oily areas. The best way I could describe it is like if you sprayed your hair with hairspray. I don’t use hairspray often, but if you do, I would recommend not using hairspray and this product together—crunchy hair isn’t cute. However, if you just use the spray on your roots, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Overall, I would give this product an A+ and recommend it for anyone to use.

Pros:

  • Soaks up oil

  • Fast and easy to use

  • Doesn’t weigh hair down

  • Cheap

  • Lasts long

  • Adds volume

  • Cute packaging

  • Hides outgrowth (if you have blonde hair and darker roots)

Cons:

  • Strong smell

  • Makes hair stiff
