The 5 Most Important Life Lessons from Sex and the City


Whether you’re a Samantha, Carrie, Charlotte, or Miranda, this post is something you’re going to want to read. Anyone that has watched Sex and the City knows that there’s always an underlying message to each episode. Earlier today I saw an Instagram post that said our lovely lady SJP hinted at a third movie—*squeals in excitement*—which might just be a rumor, but I’m hoping it’s true. In honor of that, here are five of the most important life lessons that you’ll learn from watching Sex and the City.

1. The number one thing in life is family.

“The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them and others you don’t, but in the end they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into. And sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.”

Family is everything. That saying “family comes first” is more than just a saying—it’s a life rule, even in Sex and the City. I know some people don’t have the best family support, but family is both biological and who you think your family is. I have friends that are more like siblings than anything to me. When you read the word “family” you thought of a group of people, those people will always have your back, and even if they don’t you should have theirs. You might fight like crazy, but that doesn’t mean you don’t love them. Keep them close.

2. You can’t take back your words.

“The hard thing about fighting in relationships is that there’s no referee. There’s no one to tell you which comments are below the belt. As a result, someone usually gets hurt.”

When we get emotional, we say things we don’t mean, and things we really do mean—but shouldn’t say. I’ve gotten in arguments before where I said something hurtful. It was probably true, but that didn’t mean that I should’ve said it. When you’re fighting, there’s no one there to tell you not to say something, except for your conscience. Always remember that there’s a time and place for everything, and arguments are not the time to say how you really feel. If you feel a certain way, talk about it when you’re calm, not when you’re emotional.

3. You’re important.

“But the most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all, is the one you have with yourself.”

The only person that will be there for you no matter what is you. You’re the only person that can change your life. That person that looks back at you in the mirror is the person you will spend the most time with in your whole life. Your goal should be to make that person happy; to make that person confident; to make that person not everyone deserves. It’s perfectly okay to be a little selfish—actually go ahead and be very selfish, you deserve it.

4. Be single. Or don’t.

“Being single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with.”

If you’re single you are not ugly, bad, mean, stupid, or anything like that. Being single means that you have more time to discover yourself and love yourself. It’s hard to find something worth loving. It’s hard to open your heart to someone and not know if they’re the right person to open your heart to. So if you’re single, keep your heart to yourself. Keep it protected. If you’re in a relationship, give that person part of your heart, but remember that your heart is yours. There will always be someone that wants you, whether you’re single or taken. You get to decide who you want.

5. Work with what you have.

“It’s tempting to wish for the perfect boss, the perfect parent, or the perfect outfit. But maybe the best any of us can do is not to quit, play the hand we’ve been dealt, and accessorize what we’ve got.”

Maybe you’ll never get what you want, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change it into something you love. There’s a quote out there that talks about happy people and how they don’t have the perfect situation, but they are happy because they make the most out of it. That’s what you should be doing. Try to find at least 5 different things every day that make you smile. Believe it or not, a smile can make you happier and maybe then you’ll realize that you do love your life after all.
