Dressing for the Holidays: Winter Wonderland
During the winter, most of us just like to stay inside, preferably cuddled up by a fire under several blankets. But with such adorable winter activities to do, like ice skating, walking around to look at lights, and sledding, it would be a total waste to stay inside the whole time.
So the question is, how do you dress for outdoor winter activities?
If you're a constantly cold person like I am, you're going to want to pick the warmer winter nights to do any outdoor activities. The ideal weather is usually when it's snowing, or a tad warmer. When the temperature hits single digits (or worse, negatives), I recommend planning your movie nights. Until then, don't be afraid of outside.
Dressing warm and still looking decently cute is a challenge because most of the coats that keep you really toasty can be quite bulky.
That's where layering comes in. Personally, since my body temperature is always cold (seriously, my fingers always feel like tiny icicles), I try to always wear my Under Armour pieces. If I can't find them, I'll wear about 2 long sleeve shirts underneath a sweater, then wear a thin, but decently warm coat on top.
As for accessorizing in the cold, scarfs and gloves can always look cute. Most of the time, I choose my scarf and gloves based off of cuteness rather than warmth, but they do their job either way.
The look I chose to go after in this post was a really classic, yet holiday-ish look. I wore a thin dress coat, black skinny jeans, booties, and a warm top. I layered it with a black and white houndstooth scarf and red leather gloves (which you can't see, sorry!). During December, I wear red lipstick nearly everyday, so that's what I chose to go for for this look.
Typically I am not a hat wearer at all, unless it is super freezing and I'm forced to go outside. Most days I'll just wear my hair down to help keep my ears and neck warm. I usually curl mine.
Here's what I wore!
P.S. How adorable is this background? My town set up a little light display near our village hall and I drove past it on my way home from work and was totally obsessed with it. The outside of it reminded me of Cinderella's chariot. I think the display was really supposed to be an igloo, but either way it's so cute!
Disclaimer: This post doesn't include how to dress for colder winter activities like snowboarding or skiing. That's a whole different topic for another day! This post is just intended for low-maintenance activities that only have an exposure time of an hour or so. If you're dressing for long periods of time outside, please dress way warmer and invest in articles of clothing made for cold weather sports!
