The Little Black Shift Dress

The LBD has always been a classic. Nearly every fashion icon in history has been captured in a little black dress. Why? Because it never goes out of style. It's timeless, elegant, and extremely chic.

This week, I wanted to talk about the importance of owning both a little black dress and a shift dress (bonus if yours is both). A little black dress is always suitable for any occasion. Meeting your significant other's family, attending an art gallery opening, going to work, and even happy hour. Of course, a LBD will vary in style and fit, but if there's one type of LBD I would urge you to get, it's a shift dress.

Shift dresses are universally flattering for any body type and occasion. They're loose-fitting (allowing you to "shift"/move around easily), yet still chic. Depending on the material, shift dresses can look very expensive and luxurious. The one I'm featuring in this post is a tweed material. I picked it up from Forever 21 over the summer simply because it reminded me of a Chanel dress I saw a few years ago.

For those of us who tend to be more on the petite side, I recommend a shorter hem like on the one I'm wearing in the photos. In the cooler weather, to keep my legs from getting too cold, I slide on a pair of black tights. Ladies that have a bit more fullness or length to their bodies, I recommend a hem that hits right above or at the knee. This hem will cover some areas that you may not feel as confident about, but still give you a smooth, chic look.

Adding length and shape to your body can be easily done by accessorizing with heels. To create an even more elongated look, tie your hair up in a high pony or top knot. This allows the eye to travel up the entire body from toe to neck. I like to wear my hair up when I have a shift dress on because I feel like it highlights my frame.

Regardless of your body type, a little black shift dress is a staple to add to your closet. For me, this is one of those pieces that I like to have in my wardrobe for those days when I'm staring at all my clothes thinking, "I have nothing to wear!" I actually have lost count of how many times I've worn this dress on days like that.

That's all for today! I would love to see how you all style your little black shift dresses, so don't forget to mention or tag me in the comments of your photos.
