The 4 Hair Care Travel Essentials You Need For Every Trip

There’s nothing like it.

Carefully and excitedly opening the Uber door, hoisting luggage up and over the curb, and heading towards to automatic doors of the airport terminal. Stepping inside and heading over to the nearest kiosk while watching family and loved ones bustle on over to baggage check. Checking in for the flight and then walking straight to TSA Pre Check.

After heading my ID and ticket over to security, I put my purse and carry-on into the gray plastic bin, walk through the screening machine, and collect my belongings once again.

Two minutes later, I’m through security and floating on over to my gate.

Soon, I’ll board a plane and be on my way.

There’s nothing like that.

There’s nothing like being just hours away from new adventures. New memories. New places.

I love traveling and I do it often.

For the past 7 months, I’ve been traveling out of state at least once a month. I’m eternally grateful, and not to mention totally addicted to traveling.

I’m also the type of person who likes to have my hair look nice while traveling though. Which isn’t easy. Either my curls fall, my hair gets greasy, knots form in my hair, or my ends end up feeling dry and gross. However, on my most recent trip to Ulta, of all places, I found two items that changed my hair care travel game: dry shampoo and hairspray pens. These two products are amazing, and completely inspired this post.

So what am I talking to you about today? If you read the title of this post, you already know. If you didn’t read it, you’ll be shocked to see that you’ll find yourself reading about travel hair care—SURPRISE!

Basically, I’ve found myself needing 4 essential products for hair care during my travels and I'm sharing them with you here.

The first item that I absolutely need is a brush. My hair gets tangled like no other. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a constant hair flipper or the fact the I sleep like a contortionist on airplanes. Either way, it happens all the time. The brush that I’ve actually found most useful is one that my grandma bought me (thank you again grandma!). It’s a tiny brush—maybe 6 inches long, 3 inches wide, if that—with a mirror on the back. It use it every single time on go on vacation. You can buy them pretty much anywhere—Target, Walgreens, etc.—and they’re super inexpensive. You can even get this two-pack from Amazon for $9.

Why is this one the most useful out of every brush on the market? BECAUSE I ALWAYS FORGET TO PACK A MIRROR. But when I have this brush, I know I have a brush AND a mirror.

The second and third items I can’t travel without now are the dry shampoo and hairspray pens from Bad, Baby. Each one is $5 and is about the size of a jumbo Sharpie. When I first saw them, I literally bought all of the ones Ulta had on their display at checkout. They fit perfectly in my purse and are the perfect amount of product for a weekend getaway. It’s actually probably way more than enough product for people who use a reasonable amount of dry shampoo, but I use an excessive amount, so there’s that. The hairspray and dry shampoo are very nice. The dry shampoo gets the oil absorbed in my hair and the hairspray keeps my curls perfectly loose and soft like always.

To keep my hair shiny and smooth during my travels, I have product number 4 to thank: Moroccanoil Treatment. I put this on my ends when my hair is damp or dry and brush through. I usually use it after a shower, but if my hair is feeling quite thirsty, I’ll put a bit on my ends to give a little life to it. It’s the best $15 you’ll spend. It lasts forever. I’ve only owned two in the past year and that’s because I lost the first one when it was nearly halfway through.

For those of you who are sitting there reading this thinking, “Wait, what about shampoo and conditioner?” To be honest, like always: I don’t care much about shampoo and conditioner. I do just fine with the kind the hotel gives me. My hair is pretty normal, and if the conditioner the hotel has is too drying for my hair, I just use the Moroccanoil Treatment to fix it up. If you need special shampoo and conditioner to bring with you on vacation or trips, by all means, do it. But personally, I just find it a waste of space in my bags.
