How to Look Trendy in the Rain
Sometimes you can almost feel the instant chill of a rainy day before you even open your eyes in the morning. The breeze creates dead, crisp air inside your home and comes to tickle your senses while you sleep. When you squint open your eyes, you’re awaken by the gloomy clouds outside and the dampness of the rain. It’s these kind of mornings when you know hyping yourself to get ready and look like a fully functioning adult is going to be rough.
But that’s what I’m here for. I’m going to give you a handful of tips that will get you from looking gloomy to glam on rainy days.
The Outfit
For me, picking out what to wear before I start my hair and makeup makes the whole process of looking like a person in the early hours of the morning much, much easier. For rainy days, it might be natural to reach for sweatpants and a hoodie, but that look doesn’t exactly scream pulled-together. Luckily, there are a few basics you can add to your closet to feel comfy and cozy, but also chic.
The rainy day basics I always keep stocked in my closet are long sleeve knit dresses, oversized cardigans, off the shoulder sweaters, and a few pairs of my favorite pants that fit like leggings from Zara. For days that are more relaxed—or extra chilly—I tend to lean on my off the shoulder sweater and Zara pants combo. I usually pair this with a trendy pair of black booties (that hopefully won’t get ruined in the rain) and either a cozy scarf or delicate choker necklace.
My other go-to trendy rainy day outfit for when I want to look more dressed up, but still feel nice and comfortable, is pairing a simple knit dress with an oversized cardigan. I usually buy my long sleeve knit dresses from Forever 21—they’re super cheap and come in a variety of colors. As far as oversized cardigans go, I’ve found my favorite ones at H&M, Zara, Brandy Melville, and Missguided. If your legs still feel a bit bare—or just want to add an extra texture to the outfit—feel free to add some tights. To pull it all together, I’ll throw on some heeled booties or over the knee boots. For extra warmth, try adding a printed scarf. I love mixing in plaid scarves for fall.
Umbrellas can also give a cute edge to an outfit on a rainy day. Not only are they entirely practical and will (kind of) keep you dry, but they can be super trendy as well. Instead of buying just a basic black umbrella, try picking up a few in colors like red, dark green, or even white. They’ll add a pop of color to your outfit. I’m someone that always sets my umbrella down inside, and then ends up forgetting it; however, when I have one in a bright color, like red, I tend to remember to grab it when I leave.
Tip: If you live somewhere where it constantly rains, consider investing in a pair of actual rain boots. I think these Sedgewick Rain Boots from Kate Spade are the absolute cutest. Wearing a shorter rain boot will make your look seem more chic, and your legs appear longer!
The Makeup
When it’s pouring like no other outside, there’s no reason to try to fight the weather. Hold off on the smokey eye and heavy liner. Instead, opt for a more natural look. Some light coverage foundation (or BB cream if you’re that kind of gal), waterproof mascara, brow gel, and a lip-and-cheek stain—like this one from Yves Saint Laurent—will be just perfect.
If you want to step up your makeup a tiny bit more, channel a very dewy, fresh-faced look with a bold lip. I absolutely love LipSense because the colors are everything-proof (literally) and will last all day, even in damp, rainy weather.
Make sure to set your face with a good setting spray to help keep it on as much as possible in the rain. I love Urban Decay’s Chill Cooling and Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray. It makes your skin feel refreshed and will lock your makeup in for up to 12 hours—plus if you’re going for the dewy look, this will be your BFF!
The Hair
Trying to get your hair to do something—or anything at all—on a rainy day can be the absolute worst. Ponytails look polished, until they get wet and the tail ends up looking limp and lifeless. Top knots are easy, but when they get tossed around in the wind, you might end up looking quite disheveled.
My best advice: go for either beach waves, or a braid. Don’t worry about putting too much effort into either style. For beach waves, the more textured, the better. And for the braid? Well, if it gets too windblown, just take your hair down and scrunch it a bit for instant beach waves. Ta-da!
And that’s all it takes ladies! I hope this post helps you on your next rainy day. Just remember, if we didn’t have rain, we wouldn’t have flowers—so don’t get too down about gloomy days! Until next time my loves!
